New Rochelle, NY, May 11, 2015Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers is pleased to announce that Skylar Tibbits will assume the role of Editor-in-Chief of 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing, starting with the September issue. Dr. Hod Lipson, who has provided very strong leadership and a solid launch of the journal, will be stepping down from his role as Editor-in-Chief and will remain as a dedicated part of the editorial team as Founding Editor. 

Tibbits is the Director of MIT’s Self-Assembly Lab and faculty at MIT’s Department of Architecture, where he focuses on self-assembly and programmable material technologies for novel manufacturing, products, and construction processes. Tibbits is also the pioneer of the field of 4D Printing, taking 3D Printing and introducing temporal shape-transformation.

Skylar Tibbits has received numerous awards and commendations, including a 2014 Inaugural WIRED Innovation Fellowship, 2014 Gifted Citizen, 2014 Core77 Design Award, 2013 Architectural League Prize, The 2013 Next Idea Award at Ars Electronica, the Visionary Innovation Award at the Manufacturing Leadership Summit, 2012 TED Senior Fellowship, and was named a Revolutionary Mind in SEED Magazine’s 2008 Design Issue.

Previously, Tibbits has worked at a number of renowned design offices, including Zaha Hadid Architects, Asymptote Architecture, and Point b Design. He has designed and built large-scale installations at galleries around the world, and has been written about extensively in outlets such as The New York Times, Wired, and Fast Company. The lab’s work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals and books including Nature Scientific Reports, Assembly Automation, ACADIA, Architectural Design, and ACSA. Tibbits has collaborated with a number of influential people, including: Neil Gershenfeld and The Center for Bits and Atoms; Erik and Marty Demaine at MIT; Arthur Olson from The Scripps Research Institute; Gramazio & Kohler at ETH, Zurich; Hienrich Jaeger from the University of Chicago; Adam Bly at SEED Media Group; and Marc Fornes of THEVERYMANY.
