Advances in Alzheimer’s Disease

Guest Editor

Michael Scholl, PhD
Associate Professor
University of Gothenburg, Sweden
University College London

Someone in the world develops dementia every 3 seconds. There are over 55 million people worldwide living with dementia in 2020. This number will almost double every 20 years, reaching 139 million in 2050. This is set to surpass due to the impact of COVID-19. The annual global cost of dementia is now above US$1.3 trillion and is expected to rise to US$2.8 trillion by 2050. Most dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease, with only very minimal treatment options available.

While we have made some progress in understanding the Alzheimer’s disease process, we are still a long way away from a cure and even from preventing the progression of the disease.

This prominent special issue will consider articles from the full breadth of evidence from original research papers and reviews, to thoughtful perspectives and commentaries.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Advances in amyloid imaging
  • Advances in tau imaging
  • Neuroinflammation, synaptic function, mitochondrial function
  • Fluid biomarkers
  • Advances in structural and functional imaging
  • Novel therapeutic strategies
