Special Issue on Intersecting Identities in Autistic Adults

Guest Editors

Kristina Lopez, PhD
Arizona State University

John Strang, PsyD
Children's National Hospital

This special issue will focus on the intersection of identities (e.g., autism and race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender diversity, poverty, homelessness, and co-occurring disability) among autistic adults, from emerging adulthood to later life. Intersectionality emphasizes how an individual’s overlapping identities impact their experiences of discrimination and oppression (Crenshaw, 1991). Intersecting identities in autistic adults submissions should pertain to topics related to the intersection of identities for autistic individuals, including, but not limited to the topics outlined in the Journal’s aims & scope.

For this special issue, we invite a range of contributions, including but not limited to:

  • Research examining the experiences, needs, challenges, and resilience of LGBTQIA2S+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, asexual, and two-spirit) and/or Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) autistics
  • Personal narratives by autistic adults exploring their intersectional identity development
  • The intersection of social and racial justice issues for autistic adults from marginalized backgrounds
  • Application of intersectionality theory to the marginalization of autistic adults
  • Interventions, supports, and/or programs designed for LGBTQIA2S+ and/or BIPOC autistic adults
  • Work focused on the unique contributions of autistic LGBTQIA2S+ and/or BIPOC individuals, including how the intersection of neurodivergence and other identities may lead to empowerment and insight

Manuscripts may correspond to any autism in adulthood article type, including original research, brief reports, advances in methodology, conceptual analysis, emerging practices, literature reviews, perspectives, and/or insights. As always, we encourage submissions that include autistic authors.

Submission deadline for this special issue is December 1, 2021, through the Autism in Adulthood online submission system.

Please direct any questions about scientific content to the Guest Editors: Kristina Lopez or John Strang. Please direct any questions regarding the submission process or the Manuscript Central submission system to Karen Cloud-Hansen.
