Special Issue on Obesity


The global prevalence of obesity has doubled over the past three decades, and the obesity epidemic now represents a major global public health risk affecting 650 million adults. Obesity increases the risk of multiple co-morbidities, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and several cancers and carries an associated reduction in predicted lifespan. While full obesity reversal is often impractical, even modest, sustained weight loss of 5-10% reduces morbidity and mortality risk.

Journal of Medicinal Food is organizing a special issue on obesity to highlight the role of foods, bioactive food components, and supplements in obesity prevention and healthy weight management.  This special issue is intended to reflect the current state of the art, and articles accepted will be given priority for rapid publication. We welcome submission of original research papers and innovative reviews. 

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: 

  • Effects of foods or bioactive food components and supplements on weight management and/or obesity co-morbidities. Both clinical studies and studies in validated preclinical models will be considered.
  • Effects of bioactive food constituents on energy sensing, partitioning and/or metabolism
  • Studies of effects of bioactive food constituents on adipose tissue inflammation
  • Mechanistic studies of the effects of bioactive food constituents on adipose tissue browning
  • Studies of the effects of foods or bioactive food constituents on hunger, satiety and/or ingestive behavior.
  • Effects of foods or bioactive food constituents microbiome regulation of energy metabolism
