Psychiatric illness is the leading cause of disability worldwide, with roughly 1 in 5 adults suffering from some degree of mental illness. Despite progress that has been made, diagnosis and treatment remain significant healthcare challenges given that current therapies are either not effective or produce unwanted side effects. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the underlying causes of these illnesses in order to identify new targets for treatment. Stem cells have emerged as a novel tool to model psychiatric illnesses and have the potential to provide a wealth of information for tissue modeling, prognosis, and drug discovery. This Special Issue will present recent advances and perspectives on how stem cells can be utilized for understanding psychiatric illness leading to clinical advancement.

We are seeking high-quality review articles, commentaries and original research papers on the following topics related to stem cell modeling and neuropsychiatric illness and all related research within this scope:

  • Neurodevelopment in psychiatric illness
  • Stem cell-based models of psychiatric illness
  • Organoids & 3D modeling
  • Preclinical and translational models
  • Drug discovery and therapeutics
  • Single-cell “omics” & Next Generation Sequencing
  • Phenotype Discovery & Functional Assay Development
  • Methods in stem cell modeling
  • Precision medicine: genotype and phenotype
  • Future Perspectives & Challenges

All additional information for submission can be found in our Instructions for Authors.
