New Rochelle, NY, March 4, 2021—College women in a monogamous relationship are less likely to participate in human papillomavirus (HPV) catch-up vaccination. These women had a lower average perception of sexually transmitted disease (STD) risk than did women who were single and dating, according to a study published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Women’s Health. “Individuals with just one lifetime sexual partner still have a 58% risk of acquiring HPV, and women have an 84% risk of acquiring HPV across their lifespan,” state Ansley Waters, MPH, James Madison University, and coauthors of the study. Although there is an effective vaccine to prevent HPV infection, only about 54% of females ages 13-17 have received it. There is a catch-up period of vaccination for women ages 18-26, but participation tends to be low.

“This study shows the need to improve risk perception among college aged women for HPV infection. This may increase the participation in HPV catch-up vaccination, including among monogamous women who appear to believe that monogamy is protective against HPV infection,” says Journal of Women’s Health Editor-in-Chief Susan G. Kornstein, MD, Executive Director of the Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Women’s Health, Richmond, VA.
