New Research on Integrative Health Effectiveness, Implementation, and Dissemination

New Rochelle, NY, April 12, 2021—State-of-the-art research on the effectiveness, implementation, and dissemination of integrative health is presented in a philanthropically funded special issue of the peer-reviewed journal JACM, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, dedicated to paradigm, practice, and policy advancing integrative health. The issue includes five articles related to implementation, five on effectiveness, and one on dissemination. Coordinating the Special Issue were Guest Editors A. Rani Elwy, PhD, Alpert Medical School of Brown University and VA Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research; Jeffrey Dusek, PhD, Case Western Reserve University; and Stephanie L. Taylor, PhD, MPH, University of California Los Angeles and the Center for the Study of Healthcare Innovation Implementation and Policy, VA Veterans Health Administration.
Among the implementation-related articles, is “Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches Offered in the Veterans Health Administration: Results of a National Organizational Survey.” Melissa Farmer, PhD, VA Greater Lost Angeles Healthcare System, and coauthors found that provision of complementary and integrative health approaches was widespread in the Veterans Administration, with over half of responding sites offering five or more approaches.
A second in the implementation phase is led by Isabel Roth, DrPH, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and coauthors contributed the article “Feasibility of Implementation Mapping for Integrative Medical Group Visits.” They used implementation mapping to identify barriers and facilitators that impact the implementation of an Integrative Medical Group Visit (IMGV) intervention in an outpatient setting. They identified barriers and facilitators focused on knowledge, buy-in, and operational procedures needed to successfully implement IMGV.
A third article selected for highlighting by the Guest Editors is a dissemination-related paper entitled “Patient-Reported Physician Treatment Recommendations and Compliance Among U.S. Adults with Low Back Pain” was coauthored by Christing Goertz, DC, PhD, Duke University School of Medicine, and colleagues. Among a group of patients who visited a medical doctor during the past year for low back pain, 76% were recommended acetaminophen or NSAIDS, 79% were recommended self-care treatments, 37% were recommended massage, acupuncture, or spinal manipulation, and 60% were recommended physical therapy. Patients reported that they were largely compliant with medical doctor recommendations.
