Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers publishes original papers on all aspects of human genetic testing, including prenatal diagnosis, risk assessment, clinical consequences of molecular genetics, results of population screens and targeted testing, methodologies, strategies and ethical and legal issues. Authors must obtain pre-approval from the Editor-in-Chief prior to submitting a meta-analysis. The Journal does not publish case reports.

Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers carries a manuscript processing charge* of $49 USD upon submission of each new manuscript.

Upon payment, you will be provided a Manuscript Submission Code, and will be prompted to enter this information when uploading your files to our peer-review system.  Please note:  Securing a token does not automatically create an account in our peer-review system. If you do not already have an account, you will be asked to create one before you can begin your submission.

Submissions do not need to be completed at once. Submitting authors/agents may begin the submission process, save their work, and return to the site to complete the upload(s) at a later time. There is no limit on the number of times one can save their work and subsequently resume the submission. Doing so will not incur additional charges.

All submitting authors are required to complete their submissions using an ORCID identifier. Please visit the ORCID website for more information, or to register.

Processing charges and submission codes are NOT required for revisions to previously submitted papers. To upload a revision of a paper, the submitting author should log in to their Author Center at click on “Revised Manuscripts in Draft.” The paper will appear in this area, and the submitting author will be able to upload revised files without paying any charges or entering a submission code.

Please be sure to follow the Instructions for Authors below on Manuscript Preparation.  Authors whose submissions do not comply with the Instructions for Authors will have their papers un-submitted so that the file(s) may be adjusted accordingly. Directions regarding the necessary corrective actions will be provided in an email to the corresponding author at the time the paper is un-submitted. The submitting author/agent will then be provided the opportunity to re-upload the corrected file(s). If a paper is un-submitted, the paper will reside in the corresponding author’s “Author Center” as a draft, and the submitting author/agent will be able to make the necessary adjustments and re-upload the paper without incurring another manuscript processing charge.

Use of English Language

All submissions must be in English.  Appropriate use of the English language is a requirement for review and publication in Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarkers.  For authors whose native language is not English, and for those who wish to invest in assistance to improve the compositional quality of their manuscripts, we suggest using a service that can aid in the translation and editing of material into correct and proper academic/business English.  The Publisher offers a paid editing service.  Fees are determined on an individual basis and reflect the length and complexity of the document. Fees are solely the responsibility of the author(s).  Employing this service, or any other editing service, does not imply or guarantee acceptance of any submission. It serves simply to improve the manuscript for proper English grammar and usage, rendering it more presentable for review purposes and potential publication. Online submission of the manuscript is required, in either PC (preferred) or Macintosh format, preferably in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect.

The manuscript should be double-spaced with a minimum 1.25 inch margin. On the first page, give the title of the paper, name(s) of the author(s), and institutional affiliations(s). Please also indicate the corresponding author and full contact information, including an institutional e-mail address, and supply a running title of about 45 characters. 

On the second page, supply a structured Abstract of about 200 words with distinct, labeled sections (e.g., Aims, Methods, Results, Discussion and/or Conclusions).

Subsequent pages should provide the following in sequence: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgments, References, tables, and figure legends. Number pages consecutively. The first author’s last name should appear on each page. A separate page should include the full mailing address and contact information (telephone, fax, and e-mail address) for each author listed on the title page. Authors should also include the names, affiliations, and institutional e-mail addresses of at least 3 reviewers. Original articles should be limited to 3,000 words, and Review articles should not exceed 4,000 words. These word counts do NOT include the abstract, acknowledgment or disclosure sections, or the reference list.

Short Reports should have a limit of 1,500 words and a maximumof three figures and tables combined. Short reports are generally for the publication of:  negative data; small series studies dealing with rare diseases; minor advances in technique; or confirmatory studies particularly those performed in different ethnic groups than the original study used.


Prepare each table with its caption in a separate file. Use arabic numerals to number tables. Do not repeat information that is given in the text, and do not make a table for data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences.The Journal will publish color photographs, but the author will be charged for the cost of color  printing. The Publisher will provide the author with a more precise cost estimate when the figures are received. For further details, contact the Editor or Publisher. Please follow these guidelines for submitting figures:

  • Do NOT embed art files into a Word or PDF document. Figures provided in this format cannot be used for production purposes.
  • Line illustrations should be submitted at 600 dpi.
  • Halftones and color should be submitted at a minimum of 300 dpi.
  • Save as either TIFF or EPS files. JPEG files are for screen representation-quality only and will print very poorly during the printing process. To ensure proper print quality, please submit only TIFF or EPS files.
  • Color art must be saved as CYMK - not RGB. (NB: If RGB files are submitted, the files will be converted to CYMK and some color variation will occur.)
  • Black and white art must be submitted as grayscale – not RGB.
  • Do NOT submit PowerPoint, PDF, Bitmap or Excel figure or table files. When naming your figure and table files, please label them with the main author’s last name, followed by a period (.), and then list the figure number. Ex: Smith.Fig1; Smith.Table1. Label figures and tables inside the files in addition to naming the file with the figure or table number. (ie: When figures or table files are opened, the figure or table number should appear inside the file.)

You will be given directions on how to correct any files which do not pass. 



  • A title page includes the title of the paper, as well as ALL names, e-mail addresses, and contact information.
  • An abstract (uploading your abstract into the appropriate field in Manuscript Central will NOT automatically incorporate it into the text file, so please include the abstract within the manuscript file).
  • Reference section correctly formatted (see examples).
  • Tables and figures should be uploaded as individual files.
  • Do NOT upload a PDF of your text file.



Perhaps the best and easiest way to convert Word or Excel files into a format which is suitable for print is to scan them using the below guidelines:

  • All files should be scanned at 100% size.
  • 300 dpi
  • Final color mode: CMYK
  • save file as: .tif or .eps

Color publication of figures is encouraged, but the cost for color printing must be subsidized by the author(s). Color costs apply to all manuscripts, including those invited, unless the contributor has made prior arrangements with the Publisher. Alternatively, figures may be published in color in the online version of the journal, and black and white in the print version. This is an administrative cost and is instituted since two versions of the article must be prepared; one for print and one for online.

Please upload individual files of all manuscript material—do NOT upload a single PDF file containing all text, figure, and table files of your paper. Once all individual files are uploaded on to Manuscript Central, the system will automatically create a single PDF proof for you and the peer-review process.


Within the text, all references should be cited by authors and dates. Reference citations are not permitted in the abstract of a paper. If more than two authors are involved, use et al. after the first author’s name. If several papers by the same authors in the same year are cited in one sentence, use a lower case letter designation to indicate the individual papers—i.e. (Dunn and Studier, 1973a, 1973b). Use the same designation in the reference list. In the References section, each item should be double-spaced and listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. Each reference should include all authors’ names and the complete title of the cited paper. If more than three authors are involved, use et al. after the third author’s name. When data from an unpublished source are given, supply the researcher’s name. If the work is in press, give the journal in which it is to be published or the name of the publisher. Abbreviation of journal names should follow the style of MEDLINE.

Immediately following the Acknowledgments section, include a section entitled ‘‘Author Disclosure Statement.’’

In this portion of the paper, authors must disclose any commercial associations that might create a conflict of interest in connection with submitted manuscripts. This statement should include appropriate information for EACH author, thereby representing that competing financial interests of all authors have been appropriately disclosed according to the policy of the Journal. It is important that all conflicts of interest, whether they are actual or potential, be disclosed. This information will remain confidential while the paper is being reviewed and will not influence the editorial decision.

If no conflicts exist, the authors must state ‘‘No competing financial interests exist.’’


The author must obtain permission whenever it is required in conjunction with the reproduction of material such as figures and tables from copyrighted material. Written permission must be obtained from the publisher of the journal or book concerned. The publication from which the figure or table is taken must be listed in the reference list. Finally, a footnote of a reprinted table, or of the legend of a reprinted figure should read, “reprinted by permission from Jones et al.” and list the appropriate reference. All permissions listings must be shown in the manuscript—they cannot be entered on proofs. Manuscripts submitted to this Journal must not be under consideration elsewhere.


Reprints may be ordered by following the special instructions that will accompany page proofs, and should be ordered at the time the corresponding author returns the corrected page proofs to the Publisher. Reprints ordered after an issue is printed will be charged at a substantially higher rate.

Copyright and Licensing

If you choose to publish with open access, you will retain copyright of your article and a Creative Commons license will be applied. The liberal Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC-BY) license is the default open access license used at Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers. The CC-BY license permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly credited.

At this time we allow authors to choose between the CC-BY or CC-BY-NonCommercial license. A limited number of journals offer NonCommercial licenses exclusively.

Publishing open access includes an article publication charge (APC) and authors are asked to fill out a short open access order form.  You can pay by credit card or receive an invoice to be returned with payment or via bank transfer. Please remember that traditional subscription journals can carry mandatory or optional author fees. The Liebert Open Access APC does not cover or replace existing publication or author fees.

NIH Public Access Policy: In order to assist our authors who have NIH funding to comply with this policy, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. publishers will deposit the final accepted paper (after copy-editing and proofreading) to PubMed Central (PMC) on behalf of the authors. Authors need not take any action. The manuscript's public access posting on PMC will occur 12 months after final publication. This service is provided free of charge. Please note that authors may not deposit manuscripts directly to PMC or other sites without permission from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.

Publishing in Subscription Journals

By signing the copyright transfer statement, authors still retain a set of rights that allow for self-archiving.

Authors may archive their preprint manuscripts (version prior to peer review) at any time without restrictions. Authors may archive their postprint manuscripts (accepted version after peer review) in institutional repositories, preprint servers, and research networks after a 12 month embargo. The 12 month embargo period begins when the article is published online. Postprints must not be used for commercial purposes and acknowledgement must be given to the final publication, and publisher, by inserting the DOI number of the article in the following sentence: “Final publication is available from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers[insert DOI]”. Authors may archive on their personal website without an embargo provided their manuscript is updated with an acknowledgement to the publisher copyright and final published version.

The final published article (version of record) can never be archived in a repository, preprint server, or research network.


Publishing Open Access

Authors that wish to easily comply with funder or institutional open access mandates should consider publishing open access. Liebert Open Access option allows authors to make their research freely available online without restrictions. Additionally, Liebert Open Access option allows authors to retain copyright, archive and share the final published version of their article without restrictions.
