Welcome

Mary Ann Liebert

I am so excited. We are celebrating our 40th anniversary this year. 40 years in 2020! Over the weekend, I looked at our most recent catalog and the publications that are shown and described in-depth, and I felt an enormous sense of pride, as well as amazement. And I did something I rarely do: I sat back and tried to reminisce. That was very hard because I am someone who is so focused on the present. I never think about yesterdays or tomorrows. I am always in the moment. This past week I was a guest on a forthcoming podcast by Alan Russell, PhD, (Director of the Disruptive Health Technology Institute, Carnegie Mellon University) and he asked me how I come up with the ideas for all of these publications. It was a very hard question, and while there are many elements in play, there is also prescience and a thought process I cannot really explain. My mind goes in many directions, often at the same time.

A source of great pride is our flagship, Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News (GEN), which is 39 years young and still growing exponentially. This year, we changed the format and expanded the content, and it is a critical companion to your peer-reviewed journals; its content focuses on science and business that is essential in understanding, participating in, and funding R&D. GEN belongs in your library!

As does Clinical OMICs, which takes up where GEN leaves off, focusing on precision medicine and molecular pathology.

We are delighted to announce that we are now the publisher of Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Medicine, which has a long previous history as JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

How proud I am of the more than 90 very focused publications that bear my name, and I have to acknowledge our wonderful staff who makes all these ideas a reality. 40 years young in 2020!!!! Dance with us!

Yours 24/7,
Mary Ann
Founder, President, and CEO

Get to Know Us!

Joao Marcos Abreu

We are excited to introduce this installment of our newest feature—a Q&A with a member of the Mary Ann Liebert Inc., publishers team. This issue’s Q&A is with Joao Marcos Abreu, Publisher Sales Manager Latin America at PCG. He is our Sales Agent for South America.

What career path brought you to Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.?

I got my bachelor’s degree in advertising and started working at J.W Thompson. From there I moved industries and to positions at TV Manchete, a local record company, Reader’s Digest, and eventually to AIG’s team in Brazil, to manage digital transformation for this big insurance corporation. While I was working in Sao Paulo, my family remained in Rio de Janeiro and I felt that I had to move back home. I applied to a position at Elsevier because I liked the challenge of leading the transition of trade books from print to digital. That was when I was invited to work with sales and had my first contact with publishing and science. Finally, I found a purpose in my career. I had heard about Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. when I was working for Elsevier Health and Science, but I didn’t have any idea that I would be working for Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. one day. When I joined PCG it was the first time I started working at an Agent instead of a Publisher. When PCG announced that I was going to represent Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. it came as a big and wonderful surprise! And here I am. This is a small world indeed.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I like to read a good book, especially the ones that cover technology, futurism, and artificial intelligence. I also love to practice sports: soccer, tennis, and swimming.

What is your preferred exhibition hall placement? By an entrance? By the food? Aisle/corner?

When available, I usually pick a place by the food, which is where people hang out during the breaks and are more open to a quick talk.

What’s a surprising or unexpected thing you have learned selling Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. journals?

I’ve learned that a medium-sized publisher or a small publisher has much more to offer to institutions and researchers than a big publisher. Not only in terms of content, price or customization, but also in terms of independence and commitment to pure science.

What is the best live event – music, theater, sports – you have attended?

In 2002 the Canadian rock band, Rush, my favorite band, landed in Brazil and performed at Maracanã (soccer stadium). I'm lucky I was there. I’m sad that the drummer Neil Peart passed away recently.
