The editors of Medical Acupuncture invite all readers to submit a paper in support of an upcoming special edition focusing on how acupuncture is taught around the world.  In particular, we are looking for papers that discuss the educational curricula used to train physician and/or non-physician acupuncturists in different schools, states and/or countries.

The purpose of this special edition is to help expand the use of acupuncture throughout the medical community, so we need your help in identifying and disseminating best practices in acupuncture education, which in turn, will help us establish a more robust community of practice.

Some specific questions that you may want to address include the following, i.e., in your school, state, and/or country:

  • Are medical students introduced to and/or taught acupuncture?
    • If yes, how do you incorporate western medicine and traditional medicine on your curriculum?
    • What techniques do you teach?  Are there any sample curricula or best practices that you can share?
  • How are physician-acupuncturists trained?  If a physician wanted to become a full-fledged medical acupuncturist, what type of training would be needed?  Is there a core curriculum that all physician-acupuncturists are expected to master?
    • What kind of acupuncture theory do you teach?
    • What kind of acupoints system do you use for teaching?
  • How are non-physician acupuncturists trained?  Are there any prerequisites for receiving this type of training?
    • How many training programs are available in your country and what does a typical curriculum look like?
    • What kind of eastern or traditional medicine theories does your program teach?
  • When it comes to acupuncture related education, teaching, or community outreach, are there any best practices or recommendations that others might benefit from?
  • What is the biggest challenge facing your acupuncture program?
    • Does your program include instruction regarding acupuncture safety?
    • Do you trace the career progression of your students, once they graduate from your program?  If so, do you have any statistical data that you can share?
    • Besides acupuncture, does your program also teach acupressure?
