The biotech industry has been booming in recent years, setting records in the number of new drugs winning approval and new technologies going to market, fueling further innovation in the industry. Despite this unprecedented progress, systemic discrimination continues to limit equitable representation and accessibility of these technologies, leading to rampant disparities across racial or ethnic groups, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability status, socioeconomic status, geographic location, and more. These inequities also infiltrate leadership roles in the workforce, as approximately 80% of biotech CEOs identify as men and 70% of CEOs identify as white. Ensuring equitable representation during innovative research and development is imperative for scientific excellence, objectivity, and trust. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) considerations are paramount for fostering innovation, bringing these technologies to their full potential, and fueling a strong bioeconomy.

GEN Biotechnology is pleased to announce a call for papers for our special issue: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Biotechnology

This collection of research articles, reviews, commentaries and perspectives will be published in 2024. We invite researchers to submit without delay manuscripts describing DEI issues and considerations in biotechnology.

Specific topics may include (but are not confined to):

  • Data representation considerations when developing health treatments (e.g., sample diversity in experimental design, patient diversity in clinical trials and device manufacturing, etc.)
  • Accessibility to disease treatments (financial, geographic, etc.)
  • DEI issues and initiatives in the biotech industry, academia, and education
  • Navigating issues at the intersection of privacy, intellectual property, data access and social justice (e.g., cell lines, genomic or protein sequences, etc.)
  • DEI considerations and impact on the bioeconomy
