Prof. Athanasiou’s impact on tissue engineering and healthcare has been transformative, with contributions including biodegradable scaffolds and self-assembled cell-based strategies for cartilage regeneration. His impact on society is evidenced by the companies he has launched (e.g., Osteobiologics, Vidacare) and the 15 FDA-approved products he invented, spanning diverse areas such as orthopedics, emergency medicine, and diabetes. With his passion for training and mentorship, Prof. Athanasiou has created an enduring legacy with the contributions of generations of his protégés, and in addition the Athanasiou family has established an endowment with the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) to recognize excellence in young investigators as future leaders in biomedical engineering. Born and raised in Cyprus, Prof. Athanasiou began his independent career at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, moving on to Rice University, University of California-Davis, and University of California-Irvine. Prof. Athanasiou has served as a department chair (UC-Davis), as President of BMES, and is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

The focus of this special issue is to highlight the impact of Prof. Athanasiou in the field of tissue engineering with an emphasis on his trainees, collaborators, and close colleagues over the years, and on translational scientific studies from industry that support tissue engineering.

The Guest Editors of this special issue will consider original research papers, methods papers, and reviews relevant to the current focus. Examples of areas of interest may include:

  1. Submissions from past trainees of Prof. Athanasiou that are relevant to the scope of Tissue Engineering
  2. Original studies and especially reviews from current and past collaborators and close colleagues that are relevant to the scope of Tissue Engineering
  3. Hypothesis-driven scientific studies from industry that support the translation of tissue engineering therapies
  4. Original studies relevant to the scope of Tissue Engineering led by investigators in Cyprus or the nearby surrounding region, particularly early career individuals
  5. Groundbreaking new approaches to cartilage regeneration, with emphasis on in vivo studies
