New Rochelle, NY, August 01, 2023—Maternal thyroid function in early pregnancy appears to have a long-term effect on white matter development in offspring, according to a new study. The study is published in the peer-reviewed journal Thyroid®, the official journal of the American Thyroid Association® (ATA®). Click here to read the article now.

Lassi Björnholm, MD PhD, MSc, from the University of Oulu, and coauthors, measured free thyroxine (FT4) and thyrotropin (TSH) levels in early pregnancy to study the association of maternal thyroid function and brain white matter integrity in offspring in early adulthood.

“Our results suggest that maternal FT4 levels in early pregnancy may modulate axonal characteristics, with a long-term effect on offspring white matter development,” stated the investigators.
